Universal Orlando Confirms Demolition of Lost Continent in Islands of Adventure

|

Universal Orlando Resort has confirmed that there will soon be construction activity in the Lost Continent section of its Islands of Adventure theme park. The confirmation comes via a statement to the Orlando Business Journal. Here’s the latest.

Demolition Starting Soon in Lost Continent at Islands of Adventure

A recently filed permit by Universal Orlando Resort listed the demolition of 5 acres of “theme park site”, including “retail, show, attraction buildings, and associated utilities”. The description of the permit has since been updated to simply state “demolition project 555”.

As it turns out, the relevant portions of Lost Continent total roughly 5 acres, including the former Poseidon’s Fury attraction, the former The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad theater, and the current Mythos Restaurant. In a statement to OBJ, Universal said that the upcoming construction is “part of site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments”.

In the coming months, there will be construction activity in Lost Continent as part of site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments.
Universal Orlando Resort statement

The statement stops short of saying “demolition” as noted in the permit, and “site planning” is a carefully constructed term, but ensuring the area is ready for future developments very likely means demolition of the existing, purpose-built facilities.

As to what could replace Lost Continent, my understanding is that Zelda is still the leading contender. Of course, Universal Orlando Resort has not officially announced any concrete plans for the area, and the recent statement even seems to suggest that a final decision on a replacement hasn’t been made, but that seems unlikely.

Universal has a history of not announcing projects until they are well underway – essentially the exact opposite of how Walt Disney World handles large projects.

Universal execs have been bullish on theme parks for a number of years now, going back to when they pushed through the COVID-19 shutdowns to continue construction on projects while Disney hit the pause button. More recently, top execs have mentioned that not only is Universal already developing plans for the first major expansion of Epic Universe, but they also have projects under development at Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida.

The Islands of Adventure project referenced is very likely going to be the Lost Continent replacement, while work on a replacement for the former Rip Ride Rocket roller coaster is already underway at Universal Studios Florida.
